Euro Coop applauds European Parliament's Vote Against Cloning
Brussels, 27 June 2008 - The agriculture committee of the European Parliament adopted unanimously a draft resolution calling for a ban on cloning of animals for food supply. The text urges the Commission to act so that the production and import of cloned animals into the EU are outlawed.
Euro Coop is pleased that the EP, acting in its capacity of representative of the European people, has voiced consumers' concerns over the safety of food derived from clones, over the health and welfare problems that the technique causes to animals and over the potential reduction of genetic diversity that widespread use of cloning might induce.
Euro Coop now expects the resolution to be adopted by the Parliament's plenary and counts on the Commission to react swiftly and with due seriousness to what it considers a threat to Europe's agricultural model.
EURO COOP is the European Community of Consumer Cooperatives, whose members are the national organisations of consumer cooperatives in 18 European countries. Created in 1957, EURO COOP today represents over 3,200 local and regional cooperatives, the members of which amount to more than 25 million consumers across Europe.
