PRESS RELEASE - EUROPEAN PARLIAMENT CONFIRMS COMMITTEE ON CLIMATE CHANGE

Brussels, 11 May 2007 – Euro Coop, the European Community of Consumer Co-operatives, welcomes the decision of the European Parliament (EP) to confirm the composition of the Temporary Committee on Climate Change.

Fighting climate change is a shared priority of the European consumer co-operatives and we are therefore happy to learn that the EP has taken a significant step to address this issue in a more organic and dedicated way - commented Euro Coop Policy Adviser Rosita Zilli after the decision taken in yesterday’s EP plenary session. “This decision proves that there is a real interest from the EU institutions towards its citizens and consumers and it is therefore with great interest that we look at the work which will be carried out within this body” – she continued.

Euro Coop now calls on the EU institution to carry out an effective work able to prove to the European citizens and consumers that Europe is ready to take the world leadership in tackling climate change and to give therefore a valuable contribution to the building of a more sustainable society.

EURO COOP is the European Community of Consumer Cooperatives, whose members are the national organisations of consumer cooperatives in 17 European countries. Created in 1957, EURO COOP today represents over 3,200 local and regional cooperatives, the members of which amount to more than 22 million consumers across Europe.
