Euro Coop's answer to the Commission's consultation paper on Meat and Bone Meal
Euro Coop, the European Community for Consumer Cooperatives welcomes the Commission's consultation paper on Meat and Bone Meal and is happy to answer the two questions raised on page 2.
- Euro Coop supports the exclusion of fallen animals and all condemned material from the feed chain. Indeed in our position paper on BSE of 10 July 1996 we went further by calling for the Commission to give priority to consumers' interests and public health and therefore to ban the use in feedstuffs of all animals excluded from the food chain.
- As for a possible ban on the use of all animal protein in the feeding of ruminants, we support a ban in the long term.
However we note the need to have high protein feed in certain production, particularily where it is needed for animal welfare reasons. Euro Coop therefore considers that the use of avian and fish protein should be retained in the short term and that urgent research should be undertaken to find alternatives.
