Decisive years for european consumer protection
 
Reduction of the number of pesticides


On 16 May 1995 EURO COOP took part in a press conference of the European Environmental Bureau and called for a reduction in the total number of approximately 700 pesticides circulating on the European market and the testing of the first series of about 90 pesticides (insecticides, fungicides, herbicides) before the latter are included in the positive list of EEC-approved active substances set up by the European Commission which then would be used in the entire European Union.

EURO COOP in a letter dated 22 June 1995 asked its member organisations to bring pressure on their respective governments so that certain pesticides that are still used in several Member States, be not included in the harmonized positive list because some of them are highly toxic and for this reason have already been banned in certain Member States, whilst others on the basis of scientific documents and toxicological expertise should also be banned for use by human beings because of their toxicity. They are the following pesticides:
