DG Health and Consumer Protection
Dear Sir/Madam
EURO COOP - the European Community of Consumer Co-operatives - cordially invites you to discuss :
Maximum Harmonisation : Consumer Detriment or Consumer Benefit ?
on Friday, 31 October 2003
at the European Economic and Social Committee, Brussels

Maximum Harmonisation…
The European Commission Consumer Policy Strategy 2002-2006 stressed the need to progressively adapt existing consumer legislation from minimum to maximum harmonisation measures in order to meet the objective of ensuring a high, common level of consumer protection across the EU. We are therefore seeing increasing numbers of initiatives based on this new principle. However, not all stakeholders are convinced that maximum harmonisation will truly benefit consumers.
…and its practical applications
The EURO COOP Seminar will therefore examine with a critical eye via three round tables how this new way of legislating can enhance consumer protection. The Round Tables shall examine in particular:
Each round table shall comprise speakers presenting the consumer viewpoint, the position of professionals and the stance of the various EU institutions and shall include question-and-answer sessions.
The Seminar aims to raise awareness and understanding of the implications of maximum harmonisation with a view to ensuring the development of balanced EU consumer legislation.

Who should attend?
